His parents were in the grocery business. He decided to join them in this effort after his brother promised to join him in the family business after graduating from college. In 1980 they opened Thrif-tee Foods in Liberty. In 1983 Wiggins Grocery on Beaumont Avenue was sold but they continued to operate Thrif-tee Food Stores in Dayton and Liberty. Hillary served on the board of the bank several years.

He operated his ranch, at Ames, Texas, which he named “Hardtimes” where he raised Longhorns and he enjoyed his grandchildren. Hillary was an avid duck and goose hunter with family and friends and his beloved Labrador “Jack” by his side.
