Elderly Man’s Death Apparent Suicide

NORTH LIBERTY COUNTY, November 15, 2004 – According to a spokesperson for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the residence of an elderly man on off FM 787 on Saturday evening.

The elderly man, identified as Alton Marshall Smith, age 75, lived on the same property as his elderly mother and was discovered by a family friend dead inside his home.

His death was caused by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot to the head from a 22-caliber rifle.

The man was discovered around 7:00 PM on Saturday and had been dead less than 24 hours at the time of discovey according to investigators.
