Our Way of Life is Threatened EDITORIAL

UNITED STATES, October 8, 2005 – The actions of the present administration in Washington is threatening our way of life. This is made evident by the recent storms Rita and Katrina. We are vulnerable and will by paying for this present administrations error in judgment for years.

We are fighting a war in Iraq that cannot be justified on any grounds other the than right wing ideological reasons and not sound judgment. It’s costing us all a small fortune leaving us unprepared to react to any nature catastrophe and exposing our vulnerability. At a time when the Department of Homeland Security is spending millions on such things as underwater cameras in the hope there will be a need to inspect vessels in the Houston Ship Channel people in our own community are going hungry for the first time in their lives as a result of Rita.

Rita has also exposed other vulnerabilities. There is a shortage of refining capacity in this country due to the fact there has not been a new refinery built here in decades. There are new refineries being built, but they are being built in foreign countries close the feedstock of oil and gas. Good jobs provided by refineries and petrochemical plants are lost forever plunging more of our people into poverty. Everyone realizes you can’t pay the price to build a new refinery in the United States and operate it at a profit. Government, rather than ignore the problem making us vulnerable, should do something about it. If people have a little money they can largely take care of themselves and situations like we are currently experiencing with Katrina and Rita can be avoided.

There is a hugh quantity of natural gas production which if off line at the present time due to Katrina and Rita. Highly placed sources in the oil and gas industry worry today that should we have a hard winter in the north east, schools and other government buildings will have to close because there will not be enough natural gas to heat them.

At a time when George W. Bush demanded and received tax cuts for the rich, he will most likely leave office with some of the highest government deficits we’ve ever seen which we’ll be paying for, for years.

Once the people of Iraq get a taste of real American style democracy with all it’s government regulation, taxation and poor judgment, they’ll want Saddam back.
