Two Local People Killed in Major Accident VIDEO in QuickTime LIBERTY, December 10, 2006 – Two local residents were killed in a major head on collision Sunday night at approximately 7:46 PM on US 90 near the bottom of the Ames hill.
Justice of the Peace Bobby Rader pronounced Genevieve D. Jackson age 50 of Liberty and Dwayne Douglas Roberts age 33 of Liberty dead at the scene as a result of injuries they sustained in the accident.
According to Investigator Gary Martin of the City of Liberty Police Department Darren Edwards age 36 of Raywood was traveling east on US 90 passing a pickup pulling a travel trailer parked on the eastbound improved shoulder of the road. Shortly after passing the travel trailer, a White Dodge pickup traveling west crossed the centerline striking Edwards’ pickup sending it spinning into the ditch on the north side of the roadway.
The Dodge Pickup then collided head on with an eastbound Chevy Trail Blazer SUV following Edwards’ pickup killing both the driver of the Dodge Pickup, Dwayne Douglas Roberts and the driver of the Chevy SUV, Genevieve D. Jackson.
Darren Edwards was not injured in the accident. The City of Liberty Fire Department utilized extraction tools to gain access to the interior of the badly mangled vehicles and free those entrapped inside.
Justice of the Peace Bobby Rader conducted an inquest ordering autopsies be performed on both of the deceased drivers. Eastbound traffic on US 90 was detoured at the SH 146 Bypass and westbound traffic was detoured at FM 160 in Ames to avoid the accident scene that closed the highway for over two hours during the investigation and clean up of the accident. Investigator Martin cautioned that his report was only preliminary and that his department would be continuing their investigation into the cause of this tragic accident.
