Liberty PD Receives Step Grant

LIBERTY, December 17, 2007 - Don’t drink and drive…We have all heard this for years but this year the Liberty Police Department and TXDOT are launching a new campaign that will reduce the number of DWI-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities in our area.

Police Chief Mike Cummings says “We are excited about this campaign. We have the officers with the certifications to participate and my guys are happy with the opportunity to save lives”.

The Liberty Police Department has been granted funds by TXDOT for a campaign targeting IMPAIRED DRIVING MOBILIZATION in other words, DWI/DUI. The grant is to intensify enforcement through saturation patrol in an overtime STEP placing primary emphasis on increasing DWI Arrests and reducing the number of alcohol related traffic crashes during peak holiday traffic. This fully funded STEP grant is to increase enforcement and increase public education. TXDOT, The Liberty Police Department and other agencies are supporting the statewide campaign “Drink. Drive. Go to Jail”. This grant will allow our officers overtime compensation while targeting drunk drivers and saving lives.

The grant will be in 4 stages: The first wave will be Christmas and New Years, December 21st through January 1st, 2008.

The second Spring Break, March 7th through March 23rd, 2008. The third 4th of July, Independence Day, June 27th through July 6th, 2008 and the fourth will be a Labor Day crackdown, August 25th through September 1st, 2008. The dates are important dates to remember, because we will be out there watching and waiting… “Drink. Drive. Go to Jail”.

The Liberty Police Department wishes you all a safe and joyous holiday season.
