Nobel Laureate Receives Honorary Doctorate at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, December 14, 2007 - Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug continues to reap honors for his scientific achievements and humanitarian service that have averted starvation for millions of people worldwide—the latest an honorary doctorate bestowed on him Friday by Texas A&M University, the institution with which he has been affiliated for more than two decades.

Borlaug, who holds the unique rank of Distinguished Professor of International Agriculture at Texas A&M, was presented his honorary doctorate during the first of the university’s mid-year commencement exercises. The award was jointly presented by Interim Texas A&M President Eddie J. Davis and Texas A&M Vice Chancellor and Dean of Agriculture and Life Sciences Elsa Murano, who was named last week to be the sole finalist as the university’s next president.

The special honorary degree awarded to Borlaug, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970, cites his “pioneering wheat research and personal crusade to end global hunger that has brought radical change to world agriculture by uplifting humanity and saving literally millions from starvation.”
