South Zone Hunting Report LIBERTY, December 12, 2007 - The second duck opener was fair at best. Solid shoots were posted across the prairie, but many also had slow hunts. Pintails, gadwalls, shovelers and green-winged teal were the species taken on the coastal prairie. Green-winged teal were once again the bright spot in the flight. A few mallards were scattered in bags. Port O’Connor and Rockport probably saw the most consistent shooting in the South Zone. Pintails, redheads, scaup, gadwalls, teal and wigeons made up the brunt of the bay straps. Afternoon bay hunters took solid straps as well. The freshwater marsh near Seadrift and Rockport coughed up limits. High Island was the hot spot on the upper coast. There, gadwalls, spoonies, teal and wigeons made up the bag in the marsh. Trinity Bay was fair to good around Jack’s Pocket. Goose hunting has improved with the low ceiling the past five days, though decoying action remains well below normal. Some estimates tab the number of juvenile birds in the flock at less than five percent. Specklebellies have decoyed better in rice fields. The recent front deposited Canadas to the coast and some hunters reported taking their limit of three Canada geese to go along with two specks near Eagle Lake. Sandhill crane numbers are good and hunting should be strong when the season opens Dec. 22 in Zone C. Prospects are fair to good.
