North Carolina Pre-Primary Snapshot

WASHINGTON, May 1, 2008 - With its primary on May 6, North Carolina is the nation’s ninth-fastest growing state. Its 2007 population of 9.1 million grew 12.6 percent between 2000 and 2007. The U.S. population grew by 7.2 percent during that same time period.

North Carolina has a higher percentage of blacks, a lower percentage of Hispanics and a lower percentage of the foreign born population than the nation as a whole, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics.

About 61 percent of North Carolina’s voting-age citizens cast a ballot in the 2004 general election, which was slightly lower than the national figure of 64 percent.
