Driver Hits Couch on FM 1409 DAYTON, April 27, 2008 - An Infinity SUV traveling south on FM 1409 around 9:00 PM on Saturday struck a couch lying in the roadway, lost control and rolled over in the ditch.
According to DPS Trooper Troy Dyson who investigated the accident, Thomas Wesley Payne age 56 of Dayton was traveling south and did not notice the couch until it was too late to avoid striking it. He lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway to the left and rolled over in the ditch on the east side of the roadway.
The accident occurred near CR 460 in front of the South Dayton Baptist Church. Payne was traveling with his wife, Jacqueline, age 51, who luckily was not injured. Thomas Payne was transported by Liberty County EMS to Liberty Dayton Community Hospital in stable condition largely as a precaution. After Payne struck the couch another vehicle collided with the couch breaking it into pieces. The second driver stopped to render aid to Payne and his wife.
