Navigator Hits Woman Crossing US 90 Near Main Street

LIBERTY, March 23, 2008 - Crossing the six lanes of US 90 in Liberty on foot is never a good idea. Several people have been seriously injured or killed in the attempt in years past.

Usually these accidents occurred near the west end of the city however, today a woman attempting to cross the road from McDonald’s to the Valero Station on the south side of the roadway near Main Street was hit by an eastbound, black Lincoln Navigator.

City of Liberty Police and EMS were dispatched to the location around 5:00 PM on Sunday afternoon.

According to witnesses as well as City of Liberty Investigating Officer Michael Baker the traffic light was red at US 90 and Main Street when the woman identified as Margaret Thain age 35 currently residing at the Ott Hotel in Liberty, ran across the westbound lanes of US 90. Cars were backed up in the center turn lane and first eastbound lane. She ran out from between the stopped vehicles into the center eastbound lane where she was struck by an eastbound Navigator driven by Alehandro Lopez age 30 of Liberty.

Thain was transported from the scene by City of Liberty EMS and taken to the helipad at the fire station on Lakeland Drive where she was transferred to the care of Life Flight and flown to Houston’s Hermann Hospital in stable condition suffering a back injury. Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
